Scientific Name: Arctium lappa
Botanical and Historical Origin
Native to Europe and Northern Asia. Naturalized in North America. Known as 'Gobo' in Japanese cuisine.
Evolution of Historical Use
The hooked seeds of the burdock were the inspiration for the invention of Velcro. In traditional herbalism, it is a key component of the famous 'Essiac' and 'Hoxsey' formulas.
Traditional Cultivation and Harvesting
Biennial. The long taproot is harvested at the end of the first year's growth. Requires deep, loose soil to allow the root to grow straight and deep.
