It’s that time again — seed trays are full, the tiller’s groaning, and the dirt under our nails is officially permanent. Planting Season 2025 is in full swing at Triple "5" Farms, and this year is already shaping up to be a blend of planning, improvising, and learning on the fly — just the way we like it.
What We’re Focusing On
- Practical food crops: Prioritizing what we’ll eat, store, and use — no filler, no fluff.
- Soil building and animal support: Using targeted cover and forage crops like Sudan grass to feed the land and the livestock.
- Pest-resistant planning: Leaning into companion placement and hardy cultivars to give our seedlings a fighting chance.
- Direct management: Smaller bed plots, tighter care cycles, and daily walk-throughs to keep things alive… ideally.
What We’ve Planted
- Onions: Red, white, and yellow — all in early and holding strong.
- Peppers: Red hot chili peppers and sweet cherry peppers.
- Tomatoes: Red Deuce, Roma, and Better Boy — staggered across zones for extended harvest.
- Summer squash: In and watching for borers and vine stress.
- Sudan grass: Being tested as forage for the goats — experimental, but promising.
- Carrots, radishes, and beets: Germinated and waiting to see who survives transplant and time.
Still on the Fence
- Okra and purple hull peas — we're holding off until we settle weather and bed space.
Setbacks and Surprises
Corn was planned — until the mice had a buffet in the seed stash. It didn’t make it. But everything else is in the ground or on standby, and despite setbacks, we’re rolling with what works and reworking what doesn’t.
Get Involved
Farm Hands should check in for transplant schedules, watering assignments, and the occasional “stop everything and chase goats out of the rows” emergency. If you’re hands-on, you’re in — just bring gloves, patience, and a willingness to get distracted by Sadie mid-task.
